ENTRY RULES AND RESIDENCE PERMIT IN GERMANY
Entry into Germany
Citizens of the European Union and citizens of certain countries (e.g. Australia, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Canada, Liechtenstein, South Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and the United States) do not need a visa to enter Germany.
Students from other countries will need a valid visa to enter Germany!
- See the list of countries with/without visa requirements on the multilingual website of the Federal Foreign Office. This page also contains information on how to apply for a visa.
- Make sure you apply for this visa at the German diplomatic mission in your home country in good time.
- Please note: During peak travel season, there may be longer waiting times for applications to the German mission.
- For specific information, please refer to the web page of the diplomatic mission responsible for you.
- Please note that a 3-month Schengen visa (tourist visa, visitor visa, business visa, visa for language courses without the intention of studying at a university) cannot be converted into a residence permit in Germany. In this case, you must leave Germany and re-enter with a special visa issued by the responsible diplomatic mission.
If you are entering Germany from a non-EU country, you must prove that you have sufficient financial resources when you apply for a visa. If you are able to enter Germany without a visa, you can prove that you have sufficient financial resources when you apply for a residence permit.
